Understanding Order Tracking and Delivery Status Updates

Order-tracking systems use a variety of status messages to describe what is happening with a shipment.

The exact terminology differs between retailers and carriers, but understanding common concepts can make tracking pages easier to interpret.

Order Confirmed

The retailer has generally received the order.

This does not necessarily mean the package has been handed to a carrier.

Processing

The order may be undergoing preparation, payment checks, inventory allocation, packing, or other fulfillment steps.

Shipped

The retailer or fulfillment provider has generally moved the order into the shipping process.

Tracking information may not update immediately.

In Transit

The package is moving through the carrier's network.

It may pass through multiple facilities before reaching the destination.

Out for Delivery

The carrier generally expects to attempt delivery that day, although circumstances can sometimes change.

Delivered

The carrier's system indicates that delivery has been completed.

If you cannot locate a package marked delivered, check the retailer's and carrier's current instructions for that situation.

Why Tracking Sometimes Appears Stuck

Tracking information can be delayed by carrier scans, handoffs, weekends, weather, customs, high-volume periods, or other logistical factors.

A lack of a recent scan does not by itself establish that a package is lost.

Estimated Dates Aren't Always Guarantees

An estimated delivery date is generally a projection rather than an unconditional guarantee unless the company specifically states otherwise.

What Should You Do About an Order Problem?

Use the retailer's official order page and the carrier's official tracking system where applicable.

For account-specific order changes, delivery claims, replacements, or refunds, follow the company's official process.
